Time and Devotion
by Sarah Alderman
I do not exist outside this page, independent of size and font
A true separation from self and self perception
I can rationalize my being and awareness
Because I realize I am only two dimensional
Until I am read and you take me
From your dimly lit and faintly glowing screen
From your paper and print
Into your head, your home, your bed
How many of you will kiss this page
So I can feel your lips on my body
Of work
Only then will I know, I will swear I am alive
Because your eyes are on me and with me
Following my movement line by line
I want you
To want these words as badly as I want your attention
You breathe life into my pale form
My lower case and my capital letters
This is me and what you read
Are stanzas and structures
Are my legs wrapped around your hips
Each sentence a part of myself, my fingers, arms, lips
Reaching out to feel you
The warm soft texture of your flesh
Stretching out to taste you
The creamy smooth salt of your skin
So I can savor you, caress you, devour you
I hunger, I ache and burn with want
For the reader that gives me life
If even for a moment
All I need
All I will ever need is your time, your devotion
Make me yours
Make me anything
Make me more than a poem
I want to live
