Swallow
by David McIntire
when great wisdom falls
when love tumbles from your eyes
when every song loses its words
it is the universe telling you
to find truth
to recover it
and place it on your tongue
let it replace the missing lyric
let it decorate your mouth
with misspent symmetry
bite down gently on it
and feel it permeate your teeth
then swallow
swallow
swallow and sing
swallow and dance
swallow and reverberate
against somebody else’s chest
until their wisdom falls
until love tumbles from their eyes
until the universe tells you
there is no more truth to find
