Reflection
by Janet Scott McDaniel
In silence I walk the shoreline,
waves kissing my feet,
the rhythm of their music
numbing my mind.
On the infinite ocean
my mind sails to the far reaches
searching for understanding,
yet finding that explanations
explain nothing.
Sand, cool under my feet,
so certain it is firm ground, yet
with the next kiss upon my feet
it slips so easily from beneath me,
leaving a momentary struggle
to regain balance.
Setting sun dips low in the sky
pouring liquid colors of Monet
upon the water.
With a breathless ache
I etch the moment to heart,
to join the memories
that keep it beating.
The ocean whispers to the moon.
Tears like pearls lie upon my cheek.
With the darkness, a stillness comes;
an illusion of peace
in starlight and moon glow.
Silently I continue on,
one foot in front of the other,
smothered in the kisses
of the waves.
