Sandpaper
(for Anna)
by Annmarie Lockhart
ocean and sky
converge in dark at the horizon,
waves hit the sand with
a furious calm
drowning
out the conversation
a frothy wave
washes
this world away
these strangers
familiar of face and voice,
this boardwalk echoing
footfalls and hipbumps
sea-sky stars wink among
unlabeled constellations
a different beach but
always the same sky
staring
old home
in a new world
jellyfish and sand
dollars, pizza and nickels
telling
salt scrubbed
sea tossed fortunes
there is a kind of peace
in piecefulness
