The Distance
by Jennifer E. Hudgens
Her blood is not made of permanence
Freckles painted on with water colours
Fading in direct sunlight
Smile catches
Hook line and sink-her
By the charm of snake eyed boys
Pretending to know what manhood is supposed to
Look like.
These are the same boys
That pinch her beautiful between dirty fingertips
In hopes to protect her
From herself
The iron maiden was sealed with the icicle
Stroke of their kiss
And her flame extinguished
As easily as her voice was forgotten
In Summer
Let her body become hers, again.
If this waltz has been more than you
Asked for
Let her leave.
She has been crumbling on the inside from your
Neglect
Since you first spread lies across her flesh
In the first place
She can feel the broken promises
Seeping from those frost latent palms
Her broken heart echoes
Lie to me.
And you did.
There was a poison resting atop your
Sharpened tongue
Patiently waiting to sink her spine into
Submission
She deserves the warmth of every sunrise
Embrace of every wild sky line
Etchings of something precious between the constellations
That you can never afford her
This is the simplest in executions, Awaken!
Press your first sincere kiss to her
Forehead
Cradle her careful jaw in your
Hands
Un-cast the spell that tied you both
To this place
Bloom in a place of safety
The walls of this plastic house
Will melt-low
Everything artificial will burn away
The imaginary will become possible
Again,
And pretending will no longer be necessary
To live.
