Boneyard Waltz in the Form of Litany
by Sarah Myles Spencer
My father died on a Saturday and I silently wept.
Regret clinging to my shoulders as I silently wept.
I gave birth to my daughter and I silently wept.
I built a gingerbread mansion and silently wept.
I grabbed a fistful of my husband and silently wept.
Took deep breaths in a graveyard and silently wept.
A criminal stole my virginity and I silently wept.
I lived a year inside my blanket fort and silently wept.
A knot came to dwell in my throat and I silently wept.
Women everywhere being ravaged as I silently wept.
I could not vanish into thin air and I silently wept.
Saw my backbone being trampled as I silently wept.
My son told me he felt safe here and I silently wept.
So many women nursing their babies as I silently wept.
I dreamed my father's last moments and silently wept.
I heard my mother saying no, I wept and I wept.
The dead are not coming back here I silently wept.
She asked if she could touch my belly and I said no.
Inside my heart is a broken wedding I silently wept.
There is so much damn glass here, I wept and I wept.
Oh how I've questioned my sanity and silently wept.
