Gathering Storm
after Godspeed You! Black Emperor
by David McIntire
start with a sudden crescendo
then introduce some gentle mystery
start with a melodic cacophony
one that reminds you of tomorrow
one that lifts your skinny fists
like antennas to heaven
start with a need
move on to a want
tumble through layered rhythms
and mismatched beauty
start with a complicated climax
then climb through distorted harmonies
and terrible canyons of static
start with a dream
start with a sinister public service announcement
start with everything you know
set aside just for the moment
start with everything you expect
tucked in a jar on the shelf
for reference purposes only
start with her bulldozer dream
start with the empty field
and that feeling of homelessness
the one that takes all day to decorate you
start with the deathcamp drone
and the cancer towers
and the friendly fire from world police
they are not your friends
but they do know a kind of dancing
one that involves batons and pepper spray
start with the knowledge that you are free
and everything in this world is a chain
