She threw on an overcoat
and slipped out the side stage door
for a smoke;
she noticed the marquee by the road..
NO COVER
TEN DOLLAR DANCES
and the pink and white balloons
that beckoned men
like bawdy angels.
For a moment
it was fourteen years and fourteen-hundred miles ago;
the marquee was a banner..
Marjorie is 8 today!
the pink and white balloons
stood guard like Hera and Artemis,
her adoring audience
of parents and siblings and schoolmates
clapped and cheered,
and..
Please welcome back the fabulous Jade!
She dropped the cigarette,
snuffed out its little flame with a stiletto heel,
and went back to work
while the pink and white balloons
bumped together in the breeze.
