Fire Escape
by Matthew Laffrade
Exposed in alleyway elegance I see you
as I walk west on Edward St
metal black with paint and time, a depression era fire marshal
you are unobtrusive
I turn on the social mockery and head to you, my oasis
amidst this urban chic crowd crowding the city streets
as sturdy as the day you were built your three flights bring me
to a shingled Eden closer to earth's light
I am surprised to find a young man on the rooftop, headphones
in his ears staring at his feet balanced on one of your triangular pews
I ask him what he's listening to and he tells me
he is researching for a job he has as a Barry White impersonator
we drink beers and mock the unseen masses passing
by on streets below unaware of our rooftop criticisms
the sun is behind a building two blocks over and lets us bask
in a shadowy summer evening on top of the world
