Broken Man
By Janet Scott McDaniel
Tough guy image
just smoke and mirrors,
chest beating bravado
hiding insecurity.
No romantic;
a hard-eyed realist.
Emotionally scarred;
his heart
… a cardboard cutout.
Always believing
he’s never Mr. Right,
only Mr. Right Now.
Unintentionally inflicting hurt
with silence;
instinctively pushing away,
while he waits
to be pushed.
Losing sight of
the rock of devotion
upon which he stands;
seeing only the quicksand
left by ones that came before.
Clinging tightly to her words,
studying her actions…
an example to follow,
a lifeline,
his saving grace…
glue
for a broken man.
